Exhibition Text:
In this piece, I used specific Colors / Shades that represent the school, mainly focusing on the student body. Each color and shade meaning something in my design(s). I wanted to capture the range and somewhat diverse "Cast" of the Reagan Students. The students are what make Reagan, Reagan, so I wanted to focus it on them.

Important Aspects / Notes:
- The part Closest to the Pole is the most visible, since it is not busy swaying in the wind
- The use of Horizontal Stripes is, although common, not the only Way to lay out Colors or Images on a Flag
- Colors have symbolism in the Flags, and Need to be recognizable and Explainable
Vexillology: the scientific study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags or, by extension, any interest in flags in general.
Notes on the Color BLUE:
Notes on the Color YELLOW:
Notes on the Color WHITE:

During the creation of the Flag(s), I wanted to focus on the student body, wanting to show both the Reagan Pride and the diversity of the Student Body. Which is why I wanted mainly the Meaning of Colors and Simple Shapes like Circles and Squares/Rectangles.
Using my research, I focused on the Colors Blue, Yellow, Black and White. At Some point, when I had some first Critiques, I wanted to include Movement, but I decided something more simple was better for the purpose of this flag; Pride and school spirit. I wanted to keep something simple so that it was easily replicatable, and easy to print. |
| Process |
The creation of the flag had to meet some requirements. The flag had to look as clean as possible and it must be mounted on a board with the correct measurements given.
- Get a sheet of semi-thick white sketching paper
- Use Colored Pencils to Create the design on the paper; make sure no white spots to create a smooth finish
- Grab the Black Mounting board, and measure out 1&1/2 inches from the top and sides, and leave 2 inches at the bottom. Make sure piece can fit in sketched out Area
- Using an exact-o knife, score against the lines to cut, make them as clean as possible to ensure a nice mount.
- Go to a well ventilated area and shake up a spray on adhesive, and spray evenly on the BACK of the design, as to not ruin the design via glue on the wrong side or 'ugly' wet spots where glue may have built up.
- Quickly take the Paper and line it up against the markings on the Mounting Board; ensure it is not crooked or upside down as to keep a good and aesthetically pleasing look of the mount.
| Experimentation |
|
My Experimentation mainly had consisted of my different Ideas for the flag, and different aspects of the students at Reagan. Different placements of small aspects can make a difference, so I experimented with these designs to see what might happen aesthetically.

| Reflection |
Overall, I do enjoy my design, I just feel like something is missing overall. This project had a very tough process due to only being able to use color pencils to get solid colors, instead of something like paint or even something Digital. I with I had used even more time to color the flag, because you can still see the color pencil lines, and even faint white spots in the physical piece. Even though from a distance, they look as if they are solid. Seeing it up close, there are color pencil lines horizontally on both large chunks of Blue. Overall this was a long , time consuming and almost irritating process that I would like to go over again. If given another chance I would definitely try to incorporate MPS, IB and the Staff more as well.
| ACT Questions |
1. Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your art work?
I wanted to examine and emphasize the aspect(s) of what makes Reagan such a great school, the Students. So My main Inspiration was the Variety and Diversity of the students and Even Staff.
2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author ( from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The Reagan logo states "Reagan Huskies" which is very representative of Reagan, showing pride in what we are and what we want to be. But I wanted to stray away from this in my later designs, since the design would make it too complex.
3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Flags have been used for a many, many, many and many years, and to this day people still see flags as symbols of their country, state, city, etc, or even as a symbol of pride. We encounter these symbols almost every day, so it is clear they are important.
4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
Colors and Shapes; Since I wanted to keep a more simplistic design, and focus on the Colors.
5. What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
Flags were definitely more important in the past; since they would be used in wars to distinguish between enemies. Now, they are mainly used as a way to show Pride, a big contrast to the past.
